Miracles of Giving – The Story of Nandiya

Nandiya was a disciple of the Supreme Buddha living in Benares. When he heard about the benefits of building monasteries for bhikkhus, he built the Mahavihara monastery at Isipatana and offered it to the Maha Sangha. Because of this great merit of generosity, a great mansion appeared for him in Tavatimsa world while he was still in the human world. Such is the miracle and power of generosity.

Relatives, friends, and companions welcome a long-absent person returning from abroad. Likewise in passing from this world to the next, the merit one has collected welcomes him.

Dhammapada 219 & 220

“Monks, if people knew as I know the results of giving and sharing, they would not eat without having given nor would the stain of stinginess overcome their minds. Even if it were their last bite, their last mouthful, they would not eat without having shared, if there was someone to share it with. But, monks, because people do not know as I know the results of giving and sharing, they eat without having given. The stain of stinginess overcomes their minds.”
