The Mirisaweti Stupa is situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura.
Significance of Mirisawetiya
- In the eighth year of enlightenment Buddha arrived in Sri Lanka on the Vesak Full Moon Poya day and spent time in this meritorious land with 500 great Arahants.
- King Dutugamunu in the first week after becoming a king, went to the lake called “Tisa” to engage in watersports.
- King Dutugamunu is a king who went to refuge in the triple gem with his whole heart. As a result, he took refuge in the triple gem and deposited the supreme Buddha’s relics in his victorious equipment and went whenever there was war with the Tamil.
- After the war when the king left for his water bath he deposited the victorious equipment with relics in the ground where the Mirisawetiya stupa is situated currently. But when the king was on his way back he was not capable of even moving the equipment.
- After realizing that it was a meritorious land the king built a stupa here.
- This king observed a noble precept which is not very convenient for others in this world to observe. That is offering the best part of any food item he consumes in his life to Maha Sangha.
- In his entire life the only thing he has consumed without offering to the Sangha is a Chili pod
- As a punishment for this deed he built this stupa and named it as Mirisavetiya.
- 100,000 Bhikkus and 90,000 Bhikkunis arrived for this occasion of offering this stupa to the Maha Sangha
- The verses about the triple gem, king Dutugamunu used to recite always are as follows
- Buddho Thiloka Sarano…..
- Dhammo Thiloka Sarano…..
- Sangho Thiloka Sarano…….
