The Jetavanaramaya is a Buddhist Stupa located in the ruins of Jetavana in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. It is one of the eight sacred places in Sri Lanka (Aṭamasthāna)
Significance of Jethavanaramaya
- A meritorious land where supreme Buddha spent time with five hundred Arahants
- When Arahant Mihindu arrived this was known as the garden named Nandana.
- When the boundaries of Maha Vihara were marked this meritorious land was also included.
- Arahant Minindu preached many Sutras including the Balapanditha Sutta in this meritorious land.
- As lord Buddha sparkled the Buddha Sasana residing in this land, the garden named Nandana became Jethavanaya.
- Arahant Mahinda after preaching Dhamma for Sri Lankan citizens for a long period of 48 years attained Parinibbana and the cremation was done in this meritorious land.
- Afterwards all the Bhikkus who ended their lives up to a mile were also cremated in this place.
- Afterwards King Mahasen made the largest stupa in the whole world by depositing supreme Buddha’s relics including the noble hair relics of Lord Buddha.
